How eating dirt is actually good for your gut

Healthy Benefits of Eating Dirt
So why exactly does soil, or more specifically soil-based organisms support a healthy gut and immune system response? Plants need them to grow otherwise they become disease laden, malnourished and harvest fugi, mold, candida and yeasts.

As I mentioned in my video, these healthy organisms are needed by the ball ball or gut system of the plant, we need these organisms to live a healthy and long life too.

There are over 800 scientific studies that reference soil-based organism and what do you suppose they have in common? They all link soil-based organisms to successfully treating many illnesses and diseases, including:

* Allergies
* Asthma
* Gas
* Indigestion
* Ulcerative Colitis
* Irritable bowel syndrome
* Malabsorption
* Autoimmune and inflammatory diseases
* Nausea
* Indigestion
* Bacterial, fungal and viral infections

It is known that soil-based organisms nourish the cells in the liver and the colon and they then actually create B vitamins, vitamin K2, enzymes and antioxidants.

Another amazing benefit of soil-based organisms is that they can wipe out harmful pathogens like candida, fungi and parasites. They also kill bad bacteria that binds to or is known to puncture the gut lining. They bind to the toxins and remove them from our bodies. They also help smooth out the immune system and reduce inflammation naturally in the gut and throughout our entire bodies.

Some of the best ways to eat more dirt

1. Eat foods from your garden, not too clean (just rinsing is fine) and don’t peel, Remember as I mentioned, when you grow organically without the use of pesticides and herbicides, your plant benefits and so do you.

2. Eating plenty of fermented foods and drinks, like sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha, good yogurt and kefir. Lactose intolerance is definately on the rise due to pasteurization which kills of beneficial enzymes and probiotics. When raw and fermented dairy are incorporated, those symptoms often diminish as well.

3. Taking your shoes off and playing in the dirt or just walking around barefoot gets you connected to the earth and allows us to pick up many beneficial bacteria.

4. Eating local raw honey and bee pollen are helpful in helping with seasonal allergies, as most don’t spend enough time outdoors. It strengthens the immune system, acts as an inflammatory agent and supports the liver.

5. Epsom salt baths help the body uptake needed minerals and microbes, which also help support the skin, reduce inflammation and if you live near an ocean, take a regular dip or two. It does a body good.

Today, we are missing out on our vitamin dirt, thanks in part to oversanitation and antibacterial use, like hand sanitizers, antibacterial soaps and germ-killing wipes.

Our connection ot the dirt is narrowing, so I say….

Get out and play in the dirt…literally!

Bug Alert: You’ve Got Company

Headache

Bug Alert: You’ve Got Company is the introduction title of the book Brain Maker: The Power of Gut Microbes to Heal and Protect Your Brain for Life by David Perlmutter, MD

This book came highly recommended to me recently by a friend and I’ve dove into it. While I haven’t finished it as of yet, I wanted to share part of the introduction because I found a lot of the statistics to be worth sharing as most of us need some eye openers once in a while to make us sit up and pay attention or to take action.

Death begins in the colon. – Elie Mechnikov (1845-1916)

Take a moment to think about how much has changed in our world over the past century, thanks to medical research. No longer do we worry about dying from smallpox, dysentery, diphtheria, cholera, or scarlet fever. We’ve made huge strides in lowering the death rates of many life-threatening maladies, including HIV/AIDS, some forms of cancer, and heart disease. But when you consider brain-related diseases and disorders, the picture is vastly different.

Advances in preventing, treating and curing debilitating neurological ailments across the life cycle – from autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) to migraines, depression, multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s – are virtually nonexistent. And, sadly we are quickly losing ground as the incidences of these conditions are increasing in our society.

Let’s consider a few numbers. In the ten wealthiest Western nations, death from brain disease in general, which largely reflects death from dementia, has risen dramatically over the past twenty years. And the United States leads the way. In fact, a 2013 British report showed that since 1979, death due to brain disease increased a breathtaking 66 percent in men and 92 percent in women in America.

In the words of the study’s lead author, Professor Colin Prichard, “These stastics are about real people and families, and we need to (recognize) that there is an ‘epidemic’ that clearly is influenced by environmental and societal changes.”

The researchers also noted how this surge, which is affecting people at younger and younger ages, is in sharp contrast to the major reductions in risk of death from all other causes.

In 2013, the New England Journal of Medicine published a report revealing that we spend about $50,000 annually caring for each dementia patient in this country. This amounts to approximately $200 billion a year, twice what we spend on caring for heart disease patients and almost triple what we spend on treatment for cancer patients.

Mood and anxiety disorders are also on the upswing and can be equally as crippling to quality of life as other neuorological conditions. About one in four adults in the U.S. – more than 26 percent of the population – suffers from a diagnosable mental disorder. Anxiety disorders afflict more than 40 million Americans, and nearly 10 percent of the U.S. adult population has a mood discorder for which powerful drugs are prescribed. Depression, which afflicts one in ten of us (including a quarter of women in their forties and fifties), is now the leading cause of disability worldwide, and diagnoses are growing at a startling rate.

Medications like Prozac and Zoloft are among the most prescribed drugs in the nation. Mind you, these drugs treat symptoms of depression, not the causes, which are flagrantly ignored.

On average, people with severe mental illness, such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, die twenty-five years earlier than the general population. (This is partially due to the fact that these individuals are more likely to smoke, abuse alcohol and drugs, and be overweight with obesity-related illnesses in addition to their mental challenges).

Headaches, including migraines, are among the most common disorders of the nervous system; nearly half of the adult population wrestles with at least one headache per month. And they are more than an inconvenience; they are associated with disability, personal suffering, damaged quality of life, and financial cost. We tend to think of headaches as being inexpensive nuisances, especially since many drugs that treat them are relatively cheap and easy to access (e.g., aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen), but according to the National Pain Foundation, they cause more than 160 million lost work days each year in the U.S. and result in about $30 billion a year in medical expenses.

Multiple sclerosis, a disabling autoimmune disease that disrupts the nervous system’s ability to communicate, now affects an estimated two and a half million people worldwide, with close to half a million in America, and is becoming increasingly more prevalent. The average lifetime cost of treating someone with MS exceeds $1.2 million. Mainstream medicine tells us that there is no cure in sight.

And then there is autism, which has surged seven to eight-fold just in the past 15 years, making this truly a modern-day epidemic.

To be sure, hundreds of millions of dollars are being spent on these and other enfeebling brain-related ailments, yet we are seeing precious little progress.

Now for the good news: New, leading-edge science coming from the most well-respected institutions around the world is discovering that to an extraordinary degree, brain health and on the flip side, brain diseases, are dictated by what goes on in the gut. That’s right; what’s taking place in your intestines today is determining your risk for any number of neurological conditions.

Dr. Perlmutter goes on to make the connection between brain and gut, which ironically not-so-mainstream has known all along.

What I find interesting is that now science is finally backing what many of us have known and that’s really good news for so many afflicted with today’s inflictions.

It all basically comes down to “You are what you eat.” Anyone can change the state of their microbiome (gut flora) – and fate of their health – through dietary choices.

The sooner you realize that the choices lie in your hands, the sooner you can take back your health.

We’ll continue this discussion in further posts. There is just so much to share.

Need help mapping out a plan, book an appointment with me and let’s talk about this might look like for you.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and comments below. Do you agree that you have control or do you believe you are destined to be ill and let the Doctors take over?

Gut health and serotonin production

Depression

A recent health news article was an interesting read because it involves us, you and me! Gut health and serotonin production are being further studied to scientifically prove the correlation between the two.

This is important to you because serotonin is the happy chemical. It’s the one that makes us feel like we have sunshine or a dark cloud following us around. It affects our emotions and behaviors.

This particular study is interesting because scientists estimate that 90% of serotonin is made in the gut and imbalances in this peripheral serotonin have been linked to diseases ranging from irritable bowel syndrome and cardiovascular disease to osteoporosis.

In this particular study done at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena the researchers were interesting in find out more about how gut microbes and the nervous system talk to each other and explore the idea that normal gut microbes could influence levels of neurotransmitters in their hosts.

In the gut, there are three types of cell we know of that produce serotonin: immune cells, nerve cells or neurons and enterochromaffin (EC) cells.

For this particular study, they compared peripheral serotonin levels produced from these cells in two groups of mice, one with normal gut microbes and another group of germ-free mice without gut bacteria.

The team found that in the germ-free mice, their EC cells produced around 60% less serotonin than the mice with normal gut bacteria.

And when the restored bacteria colonies in the gut of the germ-free mice, their EC cells began producing normal levels of serotonin – showing the effect on the EC cells can be reversed.

Next they looked at which bacteria in particular were interacting with the EC cells to make serotonin.

They introduced single species and groups of gut microbes one by one in the germ-free mice and found that serotonin levels went up when there was a certain mix of about 20 species of spore-forming bacteria.

Also interesting is that introducing this particular bacterial mix into the germ-free mice increased the movement of food through their digestive tract. It also changed activities in their blood platelets, which use serotonin to boost clotting.

The team also found several metabolic byproducts of gut bacteria are controlled by the mix of spore-forming bacteria and act on EC cells to alter serotonin production.

When the metabolic byproducts were increased in the germ-free mice, it increased their levels of peripheral serotonin.

There are other investigations that have shown bacteria can make serotonin on their own. The researchers say their study suggests a lot of the serotonin in the body relies on the interaction between bacteria and host cells.

This is all really exciting news especially for those suffering from mild depression to those who suffer extensively.

The more scientific proof, the more mainstream pays attention and the more help there is.

If you’ve been following me for a while you know that I’m a huge advocate for consuming a healthy mix of fermented foods and drinks, eating nutrient-dense food and imputing healthy fats into our bodies.

This also doesn’t mean eliminating whole food groups from your system either; unless of course you are in a healing stage and introduction of certain foods like dairy or grains are added in later.

It all boils down to the health of your gut. When it’s healthy, your whole body is healthy. Serotonin plays such a vital role in the body, namely lifting our mood and our entire outlook.

Are you unclear about what healing the gut looks like? Share your comments and thoughts below and let’s get some answers for you OR if you’ve had some success, share your wins so we can celebrate what’s working for you.

Autoimmune Disease: 3rd Leading Chronic Disease

Meds

If you’re like me, reading that Autoimmune Diseases are now considered the 3rd leading chronic disease, right behind right heart disease and cancer is eye opening!

Over 50 million Americans are affected and a large percentage of that number is women. They are the top ten leading cause of death in women under the age of 65 and they come in more than 80 different varieties.

These include things such as Lupus, Psoriasis, Multiple Sclerosis, Thyroid Disease, Thyroid Disease, Type I Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis and so many more.

If you’re not familiar, autoimmune disease is a disease of the immune system and one of the biggest problems with diagnosis is that Doctors don’t look or recognize these immune diseases as diseases of the immune system as whole but instead they are looked at as diseases of particular organs.

What this means really, is that you’ll be shipped to different specialists for different issues. Many people who suffer from one autoimmune disease also suffer from a few and that means many specialists.

Our current medical beliefs are that once someone is afflicted with an autoimmune disease, they are no cures or ways to reverse the affects, only treatments of managing the symptoms, which means some really harsh meds that are supposed to suppress the immune system.

The problem with suppressing your whole immune system is the side effects that often arrive too. Things like depression, weight gain, fatigue, more chance for infection and even cancer.

My belief and that of many others who believe in holistic health and functional health believe that our bodies work together. So when one area is affected, it affects other areas. The same is for a healthy system or area.

When you can treat the root causes of diseases and not the symptoms, it’s possible to reverse many of the effects of these often debilitating diseases.

I believe, having my focus on the gut, plays an integral part on your whole body health.

If you were to look at the reasons that often times lay hidden behind other things, there really are only a handful of places to start paying attention to.

The first thing I look at is Gluten Intolerance. I think many people think of the gut first, which it is damaging to, but it’s also detrimental to our neurological system too, like pain, sleep, fatigue, depression, brain fog and others. Many don’t associate these symptoms to so many autoimmune diseases.

Let’s also think about the term “leaky gut”. Many times our gut is so damaged by things like stress, gluten, meds and infections that our gut becomes  permeable, which means it allows our food particles to escape through the gut walls into our bloodstream, which then means we’re not absorbing the nutrients that your body needs to function properly.

The escape of toxins and gluten starts to form inflammation which then leads us right to autoimmune diseases.

I just mentioned toxins as a culprit. We are surrounded my much in our current environment. Heavy metals, like mercury are a factor. Think of exposure from sources like mercury fillings you might have in your teeth. Some fish are heavily exposed.

Let’s not forget stress. While some stress isn’t harmful, chronic stress is. It leads to inflammation that is on all the time, which over time leads to autoimmune disease.

So, I hope you’re now wondering how one helps themselves to better health other than conventional medicine.

My answer; gut health healing is a great place to begin.

What this means is this, elimination to begin with. You have to learn what the culprits are. I’m not by any means saying to eliminate foods from your diet forever. You need to find out what the triggers are, heal the gut, which controls about 80% of your immune system, and then you can start slowly introducing foods back in.

The whole idea isn’t to eliminate gluten forever; the idea is to become gluten tolerant.

Dairy and grains is another culprit for many. The idea isn’t to eliminate forever.

Your body needs to heal. This means managing stress, treating any possible infections, and reducing toxins in your system.

The overall idea is to get to the root of the problems, treat and reverse those, and not to suppress your entire immune system, which leads to other problems.

I believe that you aren’t intended to be living a life of mediocrity and feeling bad or not living your life at all.

How many people do you know that are afflicted? We all need to ban together and spread the good news. There is hope and healing.

Kellie

Can you help spread the word?

imagesCABWV6NJ

Another awesome week and great conversations with so many leave me feeling blessed and humbled.

Have a told you lately how blessed I am to be a Holistic Health Coach? Do you realize that I “get to” help so many on their health journeys?

I don’t “have to” share any of the amazing wisdom and knowledge that I have gained over the years, I “get to”.

So, I am asking your support in spreading the word on so many accounts. If you or a loved one is suffering needlessly and needs some guidance, send them my way.

If you or a loved one is befuddled with where to truly start, ask me, I’ll help demystify and together we’ll make a game plan to start walking in the right and best direction.

The basis of this article really was to shed some light on chickens, as I was engaged in a conversation this week with a gentleman who has Celiac disease and he and his wife are navigating the healthier side of nutrition and practicing what they are learning.

Trial and error is what happens a lot for all of us. We quickly figure out what we don’t know and quickly go figure it out. However, there are many who just get frustrated and give up! This is where spreading the word comes in too! We can’t keep what we know a secret. We have to share and pass along!

In our conversation, it was mentioned that he needed to consume bone broth “stock” and said that they could go to “Sam’s Club” and get a rotisserie chicken for $5 bucks, and you can’t beat that.

While I listened to him say this, it struck me that this is a lot of the thinking that has gotten us into trouble with our health.

We think in terms of cost, what’s easiest and fastest. While I’m not saying this is necessarily wrong, what if we tweaked this line of thinking.

What if we processed our thoughts with, how can I consume the freshest, locally grown or raised meats and produce at the best possible price? How could I best benefit his/her family while doing the same for mine?

Could you imagine what our economy would look like, not only our economic climate, but our health as well?

If we were to stop relying on what’s cheapest and easiest and switch from what’s freshest and raised locally and in season, what would your world look like?

Does it take a little more thought and planning? Sure, but not really any more than you’re currently doing by making the many trips to the grocery or through the drive-thru restaurants.

While I gave the gentlemen some education on the difference between his $5 chicken and a good healthy pastured chicken, by basically saying that there really is no comparison in terms of health and nutrition in the two.

Comparison in terms of fat – pasture-raised poultry contain 21 percent less fat than conventional chickens and 30 percent less saturated fat.

Pastured-raised poultry has 50 percent more vitamin A compared to conventional raised broilers.

Omega-3 fatty acids are significantly higher as well, which reduce your risks of cancer. People with higher levels of Omega-3 are less likely to have high blood pressure or irregular heartbeat. They are 50 percent less likely to suffer a heart attack and less likely to suffer from depression, schizophrenia, attention deficit disorder or Alzheimer’s disease.

It has been estimated that only 40 percent of Americans consume an adequate supply of omega-3 fatty acids. Twenty percent have blood levels so low that they cannot be detected. Switching to meat, milk and dairy products of grass-fed animals is one way to restore this vital nutrient to your diet.

There is also no residue from pesticides, growth hormones or other chemicals that you will have from commercially raised birds.

Best of all, the excellent texture and taste won’t even come close to comparing to a commercial raised bird.

When the birds are healthy, so are you. When you support your local farmer, our economy is healthy. You see, it’s a win, win, win!

The gentlemen shared that he would probably have to go far to obtain pasture-raised chicken and I shared a local farmer’s location; he was delighted to know that it wasn’t truly very far to go to get good food.

Let’s also not forget about the wonderful egg. Hens raised on pasture are far more nutritious than hens confined in factory farms. Eggs from hens raised on pasture are also showing 4 to 6 times as much Vitamin D as typical supermarket eggs.

Not to mention 1/3 less cholesterol, ¼ less saturated fat, 2/3 more vitamin A, 2 times more omega-3 fatty acids, 3 times more Vitamin E and 7 times more beta carotene.

So you see I need help spreading the word. The word of health, hope and healing. Are you up for the challenge?

Life Giving Foods vs. Life Robbing Foods!

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? You might be asking how I distinguish between life giving foods and life robbing foods.

This past week I had the great pleasure to listen to a very wise woman share her plight into traditional eating and the reason was her sick young daughter.

You see, most mothers (and fathers) become fierce momma or papa bears when our young are sick or ill, don’t we?

We want to find out what exactly is wrong and then do everything in our power to make them better.

I know I’ve done this over the years with my own daughters and now with my grandchildren. When they don’t feel well, we’re digging and fixing!

If you’re shopping for and consuming prepackaged and commercialized food products from your local grocery, you are consuming life robbing foods.

There is a list of 10 major life robbing foods that I’d like to share that you should NEVER eat and then I’ll share the list of life giving foods.

Foods you should NEVER EVER eat….

1. GMO Foods

(Corn, Soy, Sugar, Aspartame, Papaya, Canola Oil, Cotton Oil, Commercial Dairy, Zucchini, Yellow Squash)

2. Processed Meats

(Lunch meats, hotdogs, sausages, bacon)

3. Microwave Popcorn

4. Soft Drinks

5. Diet Beverages

6. Refined White Flours

7. Refined Sugars

8. Conventional “Dirty” Produce (see EWG’s Dirty Dozen listing here)

9. Farmed Salmon

10. Hydrogenated Oils (canola, shortening, vegetable oils)

(Most baked goods use these oils)

Whew….that’s a list isn’t it?

Now would you like the list of foods that are living giving and good for you? It’s my pleasure to present them!

1. Bone Broths

2. Raw Milk

3. Yogurt

4. Kefir

5. Grass-fed Beef, Pork, Lamb

6. Pastured poultry (chicken, turkey)

7. Sourdough Bread

8. Pastured Eggs

9. Fresh fruits and veggies (preferably organic)

10. Soaked grains, nuts, seeds, beans

11. Fermented veggies, fruits and teas

Yum!!! This is the food items that I adore! When foods are properly grown, prepared and eaten, they give life and they taste absolutely delicious!

Often times in conversations, it comes about that “healthy” doesn’t taste good. Well, have I got news for you. When you eat the “life giving” foods I outlined above, your whole body sings, including your mouth!

Every cell is awakened and having a party and rejoicing! One of my clients recently shared how she’s feeling just after two weeks of consuming Kombucha (fermented tea) and Bone broths. The results are amazing and she’s seeing the proof.

Guess what else is amazing? She’s telling everyone that will listen. Why? Because when you’ve struggled with something like IBS for so long and you don’t have control over what your body does, and all of a sudden you are given a glimpse of normal and vibrant living, you feel fabulous, you look fabulous, people notice and you sing!

Isn’t it time to take back your health and your life? Do you feel doomed to just suffer through? Or perhaps you’ve tried so many things and nothing seems to work.

It really isn’t your fault. You just need a fresh start, some sound guidance, a good roadmap to follow to your destination, which is great health, energy, sound sleep, vibrant vitality and the feelings of being youthful and sexy again.

I really don’t believe we were put on this planet to suffer. We are created of a higher power and image and that image isn’t one of a broken down body that suffers needlessly.

Healthy Gut and Clear Skin – They go hand in hand!

Before and after makeup

Are you constantly plagued with acne or other skin disorders and it doesn’t seem to get better? Or….it gets better for a second and then flairs back up?

If you answered yes to either of these questions, you’re not alone.

What triggered this article; was this. Earlier this week, we (my sister-in-law Kathy and I) did a Fermenting class and demo. After the class, while speaking to so many, one particular lady asked me about my skincare use.

She approached the subject like this…”Since you’re the healthy and organic girl, it would make sense that you probably use good quality organic skincare products too, right?”

While this isn’t the first time people have commented on my skin, it’s the first time in the context of a food class.

Now remember, I’m an experimenter and researcher, so my logical brain went into the correlation between our gut health, our brain and our skin.

You see, they really all do work systematically together. I’ve always instinctively known that what you put in shows up on the outside, via your skin, your weight, your mood, etc.

When you are stressed what happens? You tend to eat and/or drink more caffeinated foods/drinks and you sleep less. You also tend to pick up more of the junk or comfort foods than you might normally.

So imagine a life like this. We’re constantly barraged with stress, toxins, processed foods and a body that’s stressed more and more and more!

What happens? We might start noticing symptoms of indigestion, acid reflux, autoimmune diseases, skin disorders, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, depression, anxiety, or other issues.

What if you haven’t noticed any of these things, other than the “normal” stresses? You’ve had hardly any real signs of gut disorders that would lead the face breaking out and/or the dry patches of skin.

There are many studies that link gut health to skin health. Vitamin A and D are essential to good skin. If you suffer from “leaky gut”, your body isn’t utilizing the nutrients that you are taking in and these toxic antibodies are floating into your bloodstream and causing havoc on the outside as well as the inside.

Since the skin covers a large percentage of our bodies, and it does absorb a lot of what’s put on it, it does warrant some thought about what happens from the inside out and vice versa.

Going back to the ladies question about my skincare, yes I do take care of what I put on the outside. As I just mentioned, our skin is a giant sponge and if it gets clogged up with toxic overload from so called good skincare, we are just overloading our system with more junk.

The big named cosmetics don’t want you to know that the more you use their toxic products, they more you are reliant on using them, as they continually will make your skin worse.

Same goes for the overload on the inside. If you don’t deal with these issues and go through a healing process, you’ll never have the health or skin that you desire.

I know, balloon buster here! The good news is this….there is hope and healing to be had. I keep saying this! At some point, I hope that you believe it internally and take the necessary steps to do what you have to!

Acne is a big problem for many and it almost always can and is linked to gut health. Clean up your gut and clean up your skin. Let’s face it. We all have some vanity or we’d not be human.

Who wants to truly live with a face, neck, scalp or body marked by acne or other major skin disorders? Let’s face it….we all need to take care of our inside so our bodies can take care of us, which includes the outside.

What experiences have you had with skin disorders and cleaning up your diet and gut health?

What’s a Belly to do?

Ferments

On Tuesday night, my sister-in-law, Kathy and I did our Fermentation presentation and Demo class in front of a room full of novices and veterans alike.

Wow, what an awesome experience. We showcased this class last year for a large group and had much success and were graciously invited to teach this year to a new group of amazing folks.

Something we noticed is that the room had quite a few experienced fermenters and they had some great comments and questions, which we love.

The base or foundation of the class is to look at the “science” behind fermentation, which is Kathy’s forte, as she’s a Science teacher by day and a great presenter by night J. She also shared her plight with Diabetes and the amazing healing journey that has unfolded over the last year or so! Yes, eating and drinking fermented foods can help with Diabetes…hmmm! Ask me how!

By incorporating the why and how, we feel it helps us truly understand why bacteria is good for us and to learn that consuming “fermented” foods isn’t bad for us or going to “kill” us, as many would have you believe.

One of the points of discussion was on fermenting in the typical fashion, which is to properly prepare and then allow to sit and ferment for several days and then some would have you can or process with heat to store.

There were those in the room who have family members that practice this method. If this is you, can I share that if you are fermenting for the benefits of healthy probiotics, bacteria and enzymes, when you heat it after the fermenting period in a hot water bath or pressure cooker, you now have a very dead food?

Why is this important to distinguish? The art of fermentation is for several reasons, namely to take food sources in their raw state, allow them to lacto-ferment and they become powerhouse foods. They are now inoculated with more vitamins and minerals than their original state.

They also are now loaded with probiotics to help our gut system, which plays the role of being 75-80% of our immune system health and it puts in good healthy bacteria to populate all that which is killed throughout our normal living.

Implanting good bacteria also helps to offset the bad guys running around too. Because our society is so heavily abused by antibiotic use, antibacterial soaps, and chlorinated water, there is no distinction between good and bad bacteria, they all get wiped out.

What most don’t understand is that we have to either put in a good probiotic or eat good fermented foods daily. Not occasionally, but daily.

Our bodies are under constant attack by our environment, our foods, our toxic Ag products and acres and even our homes. Do you realize that the beloved cleaning products you bring in to “scrub away” the grime; make the inside of your home more caustic than the outside, in many cases? Another topic for another day!

If you’re interested in diving into the world of fermentation deeper, there are many great sources, including a previous article I wrote here.

Fermentation is a godsend in my family’s home. There are at least 5 jars of different ferments as well as Kombucha at any given time. You will also find sourdough bread too!

Why? Pure health benefits….plus they taste wonderful! It’s truly a party in your mouth and your gut (belly).

If you need to heal your body, fermented foods will be a great addition. We talked about introducing these foods to young children, as the sooner you do, the easier it will be.

Have you noticed how young our children and grandchildren that are being diagnosed with horrendous illness and diseases? Is it a fluke? I don’t think so. We have to wake up and take charge of our health or you won’t be enjoying good health.

Got questions, ask away in the comments section below. What are your favorite fermented foods?

Raw Milk…It does a body good!

Raw Milk facts

Have you ever considered drinking raw milk? If you are honest, I bet one of your first thoughts is…whew…that’s gross!

I remember conjuring up such thoughts and more. I don’t know exactly why I thought this, but I couldn’t fathom drinking milk directly from the cow, I mean I was always taught that it had to be cooked and cleaned first, right?

Boy, have I come along way. For the last year and a half, I’ve consumed no other milk other than raw milk. I also make fermented foods from raw milk, things like yogurt, kefir, soft cheeses, cottage cheese and the like.

I can’t begin to tell you how much better tasting it is, how fresh it is AND the health benefits are superior to anything pasteurized, contrary to what you’ve been told or the warnings you’ve had flashed to you. I’

Now, let me also say, not all raw is deemed equal. If you have access to receiving “raw” milk from a commercial dairy, don’t do it. Why? The condition under which it is produced is key and the way the animals are raised.

The ideal raw milk is taken straight from animals fed only fresh, organic, green grass, and then the milk is rapidly cooled to somewhere around 36-38 degrees and then bottled. There is no processing, just filtration and cooling.

Diet is a major factor in the quality of raw milk. Cows weren’t meant to be fed grains and starches and this changes the acidity of the cow’s stomach environment and changes fat and nutritional values in the milk. They lack the self-protective properties that occur when cows are grass-fed. Also milk fed grains and starches, has the capability to be more contaminated.

There is a whole other topic of what’s injected into the cow, as well as being fed to increase the milk production. Many of these soy based products, mimic estrogen in humans, hence the higher hormone issues in this country as well.

I will link several resources at the bottom of this article, for those that would like further, in depth research. For the sake of this article, I really just wanted to give an overview and open it up the comments for further review and questions.

Clean raw milk from pastured cows is a complete and properly balanced food. If you had to, you could live on it exclusively. The ingredients that make it such a powerhouse are:

  • Proteins (Cow’s milk has 8 essential amino acids)
  • Carbohydrates (Lactose or milk sugar, is the primary)
  • Fats (approximately 2/3 of the fat in milk is saturated, which play a number of key roles in our bodies)
  • CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) is abundant in milk from grass-fed cows
  • Vitamins (water and fat soluble) – nothing needs to be added to raw milk, it’s already there and ready to be used by our bodies
  • Minerals (ranging from calcium and phosphorus on down to trace minerals)
  • Enzymes (there are 60+ known and the biggest help I think they play is relieving the burden from our system – as they help break down foods
  • Cholesterol (a protective/repair substance) Contrary to what you’ve been told, our bodies produce it and need it for a healthy life
  • Beneficial Bacteria (with high levels of lactic acid, numerous enzymes and increased vitamin content, fermented dairy products, think yogurt and kefir, add even more health benefits

Raw milk is the best thing you can give your children, next to lactating of course. Have you noticed the rise in Asthma, allergies, skin disorders, etc.? There are a number of studies linking the consumption of pasteurized milk to these.

Pasteurization kills all the bacteria in the milk by heating it. As I mentioned earlier, this is necessary because of their living conditions, the cleanliness of the cows, what they are fed, etc. Then vitamins have to be added back in.

Milk…it does a body good! I’m sure you’ve all heard that saying. I would add the word “Raw” to that statement. Raw Milk….It does a body Good! It’s the only milk that does a body good! Whether it’s from goats or cows, make sure it’s grass-fed and from a trusted source.

As I mentioned earlier, I’ll link several resources for you who want and desire more, as you ultimately have to make the right choice and decisions for your family.

I can’t say enough for the benefits my family has experienced as a result of making the change and I will never go back, even if that means having a cow of my own.

Interested in learning more and/or obtaining raw milk…here’s an excellent resource, www.realmilk.com

There is much controversy over this issue and the best advice I can give, is do the research, talk to trusted sources and make an informed decision.

What questions arise from this blog? Do you consume raw milk or are you afraid and have questions? This is the place to share those questions and/or concerns, post below.

As I’ve said a few times, this article isn’t intended to be all inclusive, as this topic is very in-depth and there are some strong political views at hand as well. All I can do is open the door, let you dive in and see where it takes you.

The choice is yours….here to lasting good health!

Are you crazy?

Are you crazy? Do you really want to suffer miserably with poor health and just get by? Pretty bold questions aren’t they?

This week I was privileged enough to have a GREAT conversation with my friend Jered. We were conversing about how sometimes we just want to shake people and say “What is wrong with you? Why won’t you wake up and do what you need to do to take back your health?”

The conversation went something like this, see if you’ve had similar ones with anyone you love and care about, or maybe it’s you and you’ve had the conversation with yourself.

We watch people out living their lives. The eyes are glazed over; they are lethargic and have brain fog. The senses are dulled and are taking so many different meds that it’s hard to keep them all straight.

But, it’s so easy to call the doc up and get an appointment for what ails you and then drive up to the pharmacy window and pop some more pills and you THINK you feel better for a time.

The sad reality is this….you’re not getting better. The even sadder truth is…you may really believe that you are!

Taking meds is not going to heal you. It’s covering up symptoms, not healing them. The sooner you realize that you hold the power within your hands to do something about your situation, the sooner you will be on the road to recovery.

Baby steps is what I talk about often. Most of us won’t or don’t want to dive in head first, although we probably should. We get overwhelmed with the sheer volume of information and what to do with it or how to process it.

Jered used himself, being very vulnerable, (I hope you don’t mind that I share this), he didn’t know the basics of being in a kitchen. Like what it meant to “zest” a piece of fruit or how to “press” garlic.

I believe that many are in the same boat. You want to learn, but haven’t the slightest idea how or where to begin. If you’re really serious about figuring it out, you’ll go research and learn or you’ll ask someone how to do something.

The unfortunate thing is this…often times we don’t want to appear unknowledgeable, so we just don’t say anything.

Do you see why I truly just want to shake you? It’s like standing outside and looking in! I can see all the hurt, the pain, the burning gut, the sadness and I can help.

You have to want it though. Therein lays the BIG problem. Without the desire and tenacity to do the work and take the time it will take to heal, you won’t. You’ll stay stuck right where you’re at and continue to get worse.

While you may talk a big talk about wanting to get better and wanting to have more energy and wanting to lose weight, until you actually are serious about it and make it the first priority in your life, you won’t change a thing.

I’m sorry if this is hitting you between the eyes. Well, I’m really not. You see, I need you to get mad and to have an epiphany. This is your only life. You aren’t like a cat that has 9 lives. You get 1 and what you do with it, is entirely up to you. I just truly hope that you decide to live and live it fully.

If you haven’t figured out yet, I’m a pretty passionate and an opinionated individual. I can get in your face when I need to. I can be the biggest cheerleader a person knows. If you’re facing a crisis in your life, you may need a friend and you may need someone to hold you accountable to staying on track.

I believe in you. I believe you have the power to take back your health and your life. Do you believe it? Leave your comments below OR schedule time to talk with me so you can start living the life you were put on this earth for.

To your health,
